Literary Elements Of The Flesh And The Spirit - 1472 Words

Literary Elements in â€Å"The Flesh and the Spirit† The struggle between â€Å"good† and â€Å"bad† is a conflict in which the human race faces. For puritans, the common substance is only a shadow and immediate, while everything in the Heavens is interminable. Puritans weigh on self-control and thoughtfulness to keep their hearts clean so that after their passing they can enter Heaven and be eternal. The battle between the common substance and religious confidence is regularly so warmed that one can not generally settle on an unmistakable choice. Anne Bradstreet, the author of the poem â€Å"The Flesh and the Spirit† was a puritan woman who lived in the 1600’s. Anne Bradstreet uses voice, imagery, and metaphor to show her inner clash between the humanly†¦show more content†¦The sister who is named Flesh tries to disclose to her sister Spirit that the world is filled with is filled with things to keep them satisfied. Bradstreet directly says the earth is brimming with â€Å"wealth† and †Å"vanity†. Riches is by all accounts the principle objective of the primary sister, not minding potentially how she comes into this riches, however she is set in her view. Yet, Spirit has diverse points in life. Bradstreet states that Spirits thoughts are elsewhere in a â€Å"higher sphere†. Through Bradstreet’s voice it shows she was a sincerely in order individual, and knew how to express her sentiments obviously, or unmistakably in the dialect of that time. Bradstreet moves from a moderate voice to a more convincing, aggressive and confident voice. The poet is trying to bring some seriousness in to draw the reader and keep their attention. She does this in the following stanza: Dost dream of things beyond the Moon And dost thou hope to dwell there soon? Hast treasures there laid up in store That all in th’ world thou count’st but poor? Art fancy-sick or turn’d a Sot To catch at shadows which are not? (15-20) In these lines, Bradstreet is discussing the discourse between the sisters. Modern Economics for Business

Questions: Economic models are false and so the government should ignore their prediction.Discussion and evaluation of the accuracy of this statement? Identify estimates of the price elasticity of demand for at least three different products? Answers: 1.Economic models are false and so the government should ignore their prediction The concept of modern economics has a significant number of twist and turns including factors such as trade, currency aspects, and global growth. By considering the affecting factors leading to economic sustainability Government of a country must identify the loopholes of conventional economic models to predict the outcome of an economy. Clearly, traditional economic models are based on theoretical concepts and historical data to predict the upcoming economic numbers so that financial risks can be identified and risk mitigation plan can be defined (Proto, Squillante, Kacprzyk, 2013). In the current scenario, the government of any country must not only rely on the economic models during the distribution of resources leading to economic prosperity. Due to uncertain economic situations, models can be misleading, to say the least. The conceptual economic models have been designed by following hypothetical reality-based statistics and historical data. Hence, the economic models can be utilised to test the futuristic outcome considering the economic behaviour in the past. Precisely, economic models are subjective by nature as there are no convincing verification methods to support the predicted outcomes (Dohi Yun, 2014). The failure of economic models was seen in the past during the Global financial crisis of 2008-09. Invariably, the subjective nature of economic models must not be considered as evident in determining financial as well as economic prediction of a country. As the economic models are constructed on the basis of assumption, the accuracy of the models should be questioned. By identifying the approximation based subjective economic models, governments of the developed, as well as the emerging nations, must refrain from economic predictions. Meanwhile, there are two types of economic models i.e. empirical and theoretical models. Understandably, the accuracy of both the models can be questioned as there are certain limitations of the model that may lead to wrong predictions (Beath, Chow, Corsi, 2013). Most importantly, each of the models has been created based on different assumptions. Hence, a number of economic models can deliver different outcomes even if the same set of data can be used. Lack of explanation in the economic models can be another major issue. Therefore, the reliability of the economic models must be argued (Siliverstovs, 2017). Conclusively, the analysis of the economic models and the methods of creating the models have produced a significant number of questioned to be answered. Therefore, the governments of the countries must consider the errors that can be involved in making a projection using economic models. Due to the issue of accuracy, the government must give a second thought before applying economic models to determine financial projections. Affirmatively, the economic models cannot be replaced at once. Therefore, a number of economists must be selected to recalibrate the economic models before applying the models to practical field. Precisely, it is mandatory for the governments to use the most significant and calculated models to identify the financial issues. 2. Price Elasticity of three different products The concept of price elasticity of demand is used to measure the responsiveness of the quantity demanded to the change in the price of a product. The price elasticity of demand helps in analysing the quantity demanded of a commodity before and after the change of price. Furthermore, it helps the manufacturers to identify the change in the revenue earned due to the change in the price of the goods (Marnay, Siddiqui, Bartholomew, 2014). There are five types of elasticity of demand that are known as perfectly elastic demand, highly elastic demand, elastic demand, inelastic demand, and perfectly inelastic demand. The equation used to calculate the price elasticity of demand for a product is presented herein below: Price Elasticity of Demand It is important to note that the price elasticity of demand varies from one product to another due to the utility provided by the product to the consumers. The more the utility is provided by the product, the lesser will be the elasticity of demand while other factors remain constant (Karlan Zinman, 2013). In other words, the more the product is purchased by the consumers on a regular basis, the lesser will be the elasticity of demand. But, the elasticity of demand is also influenced by several other factors such as substitution and income level of the people. The elasticity of demand of three different products is presented herein below: Sugar Sugar is considered as a necessary product that is used on a daily basis for cooking and other commercial purposes. When the price of sugar changes until a particular point, the quantity demanded for the product does not change. For example, when the price of sugar increases from $3 to $6, the quantity demanded remains constant at 4 units. Hence, the price elastic of demand for sugar is zero at any point of price. A diagram has been presented below for better understanding: Figure: Perfectly Inelastic Demand Source: (Rassenfosse Potterie, 2011) Diamond Diamond is bought rarely due to its high price, which makes it a ultimately luxury product with few alternatives. The consumer can buy some other gems, but it will not have the same appeal as diamonds. Hence, a cut in the price of diamond will not impact its demand by a high level (Sabatelli, 2016). For example, when the price of diamond falls from $100 thousands to $70 thousand, the demand of the product will hardly increase from 200 units to 220 units. Hence, the percentage change in price is 30 percent and the percentage change in the demand is 10 percent. Therefore, the price elasticity of demand for diamond is less than 1, which makes it have an inelastic demand. A diagram has been presented herein below for better understanding: Figure: Inelastic Demand Source: (Rassenfosse Potterie, 2011) Chocolate Chocolate such as Dairy Milk operates in a competitive market and has a huge number of substitute products. Hence, a small rise in the price will make the customers move to some other chocolate brand in the market. For example, when the price of Dairy Milk increases from $80 to $100, the quantity demanded will decrease from 360 units to 200 units. Hence, the percentage change in price is 20 percent, whereas the percentage change in quantity is around 44 percent. Therefore, the price elasticity of chocolate is more than 1, which makes it have a highly elastic demand. A diagram has been presented herein below for better understanding: Figure: Highly Elastic Demand Source: (Rassenfosse Potterie, 2011) References Beath, J., Chow, G., Corsi, P. (2013). In this paper I will compare and contrast how women are described as sexual, disposable trash, and men as cowards from the word pitch. The concept of Pitch is how a person (not necessarily a woman) is thoroughly disliked. In the first song by Too Short the first erase, She wont complain about sit because, shes my hoe which he refers to women will not complain. Women will do whatever Too Short tells her. Women belong to him because he owns them. The song makes people think that all women are sluts that sleep around. Rap music has depicted women as sex objects. The music industries are advertising women as sex appeal symbols. Women are put on display Like pieces of commodities or merchandise. The only variance is that the sexually-oriented depictions of women in advertising and media have contemptibly become more open now than before. It Is a notorious fact that sex sells. The more nudity or sexual reference depicted, the greater the sales generated in an exploitative and profit- driven music industry. The second verse duet by Ice Cube, See, he quick to grab a pitch by the throat and slam her ass, cram her ass, with a fat dick Cause shes a trick pitch. A trick pitch is a female in general. These are the types of behavior men desire. Women, who are sleeping around that men considered trash is normal to her. However, men are showing off their masculinity and manhood to keep their status among their friends by putting women down. Rap music is reaching more people than any other genre therefore the messages and images embedded within rap music are reaching more people than ever before. With such a large audience women think this type of behavior is normal to them. The domestic violence industry ignores women that are beaten by their partners. The media gets points and praise from people of mainstream hip-hop norms. Often, the appeal of commentary on hip- pop comes from rapper showing off their masculinity. Rap music stereotypes young women dressed like prostitutes in the rap videos showing off their ass, breasts, to Impress, which appeals the man. In contrast, men who beat and physically abuse women, you are called a pitch. If men are brave enough to express themselves In a rational and masculine way, you are called a pitch for that. And finally If men dont stand up for themselves and letting a woman walk all over you and disrespect you, you can be accused of being a pitch. The social norm is that rappers tend to dislike any feminine behaviors (positive r negative) In men. In this second song it talks about masculinity. If you act Like a pitch (enigma) enigma you get smacked like a pitch What the rappers are saying is that females are perceived as weak.Men dont want to be perceived as female because it (Masculinity= strength, not weakness) Weakness irritates men, particularly if its seen in other men. Because pitch behavior is perceived as female, and men arena supposed to act like females. Feminism has made it that a variety of masculine characteristics are now perceived more favorably. We see a man crying, we assume hes gay or seriously messed up. Because of the standards of hegemonic masculinity men have little sympathy. In the second song, Must we break you down to estrogen most hated specimens a pitch enigma! This song equates heterosexual stereotyping masculinity. Males typically want to show their peers that they are better than them, as this shows that they are more dominant. The artist contrasts their own masculinity with men they view as non-masculine who are inferior. The criticism is on how men talk, whining and complaining like some women do. Throughout the songs, the insults and boasts about physical size, strength, and heterosexuality. The constant efforts to compete and one up the other are characteristics traits of masculinity.More importantly, through observing these two songs, we can get a better understanding of what men in general believe. This is true because most males believe similar traits are masculine. Also, their messages of masculinity will be absorbed by their listeners, and in turn their listeners will develop the same beliefs about masculinity as are portrayed in the songs. Thus, by listening to these songs we gain insight as to how a large portion of our society views masculinity. Anti Nothing But A Word To Me (feat. Importing US food Risk Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Importing US food Risk - Research Paper Example In 2008, there were some reported cases where cats and dogs were stricken by tainted pet food while people died from contaminations in certain drugs. In both incidents, the ingredients were found to have been imported from China (In Curtis, 2013).   In response to this, the Public Health Security through the Bioterrorism act directs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take additional measures to protect the public from all terrorist attacks on food supply and all other food related emergencies. FDA is the food regulatory agency of the department of Health and Human Services and has the mandate to receive prior notification of food that is imported, including animal feed, in the United States. Prior notice of import shipments give chance to the FDA, through the support of the U.S Custom and Border Protection to focus on import inspections with much effectiveness and help protect the state’s food supply against acts of terror and all other public health emergencies. The FDA food safety act was signed in 2011 with aims to ensure that the U.S food supply is safe by directing the focus of the federal regulations from taking action on contamination to prevent it (Kastner, 2011).   The FDA signed a regulation that required all persons to submit prior notices of imported food. Close to fifty million people get sick while three thousand die each year from food borne diseases. This is according to a data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This was mentioned as a public health burden which is largely preventable. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act enables the FDA to strengthen the systems of food safety by giving them new authorities and tools to make all new imported foods meet the same safety standards as those produced in the U.S. However, building a new system of food safety beside on prevention would take time. FDA focuses on implementing the safety acts with open grounds for all stakeholders to give their contribution. T he FDA has therefore some laid down responsibilities and authorities which are aimed at improving food safety in the United States. The FDA’s new import mandates and authorities include the following (Hinkelman and Ebrary, 2004); Import accountability. During the first time, the importers have an explicit mandate to verify that their suppliers have sufficient preventive controls to make sure that the food they produce is safe. Third party certification: The FDA Food Safety Modernization (FSMA) initiates program through which third parties can verify that foreign food capacities comply with the U.S food safety standards. The certification is very significant in facilitating the entry of imports (Zaring et al., 2009). Cortication for high risk foods: as a condition of entry into America, FDA can authorize that the high-risk imported foods be accompanied by a trustworthy third party certification or with an assurance of compliance. Voluntary qualified importer program: a volunta ry program must be established for the importers. This would provide for the expedited entry and review of foods from importers. Entitlement is limited to importers who offer food from certified facilities. Authority to deny entry: foods from a foreign facility can be denied entry into the U.S by FDA. FDA has also a

High Employee Turnover Among Travel Agencies in Malaysia Essay Example for Free

High Employee Turnover Among Travel Agencies in Malaysia Essay 1.0 Introduction The tourism industry in Malaysia has grown immensely due to its potential and unique competitive edge. The sector has increased its importance within the Malaysian economy, since the 1990’s according to Bashir, M. and Ahmad, N., et al. (2008). It carries on to be a leading foreign exchange achiever, continually acting as a crucial contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, business and employment opportunity, investments, and empowering the balance of payments account. Within the last decade, the tourism industry has made rapid progression and this progression is reflected in the increase of tourist arrivals and receipts. Tourist arrivals have increased significantly by almost 59% from 10.22 million in 2000 to 25.03 million in 2012 (Corporate.tourism.gov.my, n.d.). Tourism receipts in Malaysia contributed 56% of the total services receipts average between 2008 and 2012, generating a surplus in the country’s balance of payments accounts (Corporate.tourism.gov.my, n.d.). The tourism sector has become the second-largest contributor towards economic growth of currency exchange (Table 1). Table 1. Tourist Arrivals Receipts to Malaysia Source: (Tourism Malaysia, 2013) In a recent study, Mazumder et al. (2011) concluded that tourism not only impacts service sectors but contributes substantially to all sectors of the Malaysian economy. The economic after-effect of tourism exists extensively within the expansion of the globalization process; this in turn increases the industry’s development worldwide. Furthermore, it not only generates a ripple effect but boosts the intersectoral links within the economy, through these links; international tourism consumption will impact nearly all sectors of the economy. Therefore, looking at how important this industry is for the economy, this report aims to find methods to retain employees in various sectors of the travel sector with the main focus towards travel agencies. 1.1 Issue The main issue being assessed in this report is focused on high staff turnover. However the main component of this research is strongly related to â€Å"turnover intent†, rather than turnover itself. 1.2 Study Aim In today’s competitive world, the travel industry has proved to become one of the most unique tools used for economic progression. Along with that, it has also helped improve social incorporation and multinational interpretation and understanding of diverse cultures. This allows travel agencies to expand target markets. Moreover, also in this unstable business environment, travel agencies that wish to succeed need to be accepting of change. They need to be able to not only meet but also surpass the threats and opportunities presented to them by their competitors. Numerous researches have been carried out to study the relation between turnover intent and job satisfaction. However, little interest is given to travel agencies, although they make up an important part of the tourism industry. When turnover intent occurs among service occupations such as those of the travel industry, there is not only a negative impact on the management and firms but also on the servic e and products quality, hence this may show a negative result in customer satisfaction. This research discusses how travel agencies need to focus on employee management and retention. The main issue being assessed is focused on high staff turnover intent among employees in travel agencies. 1.3 Research Objectives 1) The factors that influence turnover intent among newcomers in travel agencies. 2) To provide recommendation that could prevent or at least reduce this issue. 1.4 Purpose of study According to Kennedy and Berger (1994), turnover rate is generally at its highest among those employees who are newcomers in the company, and occurs within the duration of the first four weeks on the job. Therefore, the first objective is to identify factors that influence turnover intent among newcomers in travel agencies. However, every problem also normally has a solution or at least if there is no specific solution, there are various methods that can be applied to ‘control’ the problem. Hence, understanding the methods that can either solve or control turnover intent is the second objective of this research. 2.0 Literature Review Employee turnover is deliberated as an obstacle to attaining high levels of productivity and efficacy in business jobs or operations (Deery Shaw, 1997), especially in the travel industry, where the relationship among employees and customers is crucial. A high employee turnover rate is a major factor that reflects a decrease in customer satisfaction; this in turn impacts a loss in repeat customers and reputation of being a good business. Prior researches state that the more work experience an individual has, the less likely they are to leave (Boles et al., 1995). It was also said that hiring individuals who have experience within the travel industry could reduce turnover intent among travel agencies. 2.1 Defining job turnover intent Turnover can be defined as the decision to withdraw from current jobs by taking part in a series of psychological steps (Mobley, 1977): ââ€" ¡ Evaluation of job ââ€" ¡ Experienced job dissatisfaction ââ€" ¡ Thinking of quitting ââ€" ¡ Evaluation of expected utility search and cost of quitting ââ€" ¡ Interaction to search for alternatives ââ€" ¡ Search for alternatives ââ€" ¡ Evaluation of alternatives ââ€" ¡ Comparison of alternatives vs. present job ââ€" ¡ Intention to quit/stay ââ€" ¡ Quit/Stay 2.2 Factors influencing job turnover intent There are a number of factors that have been associated with turnover intent in studies that have been conducted in the past. However, most researches have mainly focused on personal differences, age, education, knowledge, income, gender, and job level to name a few determinants that have been identified to influence job satisfaction (Fournet et al., 1996). Researchers believe that age, tenure, job level, and income are associated with job satisfaction (Herzberg et al., 1957). Mei-Chih et al. (2007) showed there is a relationship between job satisfaction and age. According to De Vaney and Chen (2003) age has an effect on job satisfaction. Results from several studies indicate that there is a relationship between sex and job satisfaction (Bilgic, 1998; Lumpkin Tudor, 1990; Goh Koh, 1991 and Oshagbemi, 2000). Some studies conducted by Lumkin Tudor (1990) and Stedham Yamamura (2003) showed that female managers are given less pay and are he nce, surely less satisfied with their compensation, promotions, and overall work satisfaction. Studies established that job occupancy has been determined as a factor related to job satisfaction (Herzberg et al, 1957; Lee Wilbur, 1985; Schuh, 1967). Sokoya (2000) instituted that there is a major difference between job occupancy and job satisfaction. Raymond and Elizabeth (1985) demonstrated that job occupancy has impact on job satisfaction. Cotton Tuttle (1986) focused their theory on the supplements of turnover and then into their factors: (1) external correlates; (2) structural or work-related factors; (3) personal characteristics of employees. In a different, more recent study conducted by Griffith et al. (2000), gave a more comprehensive explanation about antecedents of turnover. These antecedents were classified into four groups, these include: 1) Demographic predictors 2) Job satisfaction, organization factors, work environment factors 3) Job content, external environment factors 4) Other behavioral predictors 3.0 Methodology The research conducted for this study is qualitative, using the probability method for selection of candidates. The primary method was interviews conducted focusing on focusing on the factors that influence ‘turnover intent’ among employees. Whereas, the interviews helped grasp knowledge as to why employers/managers think ‘turnover intent’ occurs and what sort of precautionary measures can be implemented to control or better reduce turnover intent. Then secondary information was gathered on previous studies regarding the same issue i.e. turnover intent among employees in travel agencies. This information was found through books, journals, and reliable websites. 3.1 Interviews Technique The survey was conducted amongst employees of five different travel agencies. The employees were selected at random to avoid any biasness. The interviews on the other hand, were conducted amongst people at the top of the food-chain in the tourism and travel industry in Malaysia. Interviewees were selected at random to gain perspective from various individuals regarding the same issue. 3.3 SIZE OF SAMPLE As mentioned previously, the survey was conducted among employees from five different travel agencies in Malaysia. Within each of these travel agencies, 7 employees from any department were selected to fill out the survey at random. The total number of survey samples analysed were 30, although the total number of survey forms distributed personally were 35. The reason was that every respondent may not fill in the form completely and correctly and therefore, out of 35 survey’s 30 properly filled out surveys were carefully examined to ensure validity of results. The survey was also made available online on surveymonkey.com to gather results in a convenient and fast method. This information gave insight for the thoughts of employees from different regions and states in Malaysia. The interviews were conducted with five individuals who are managers or CEO’s at the five travel agencies from where the employees were surveyed. 3.4 SAMPLING PROCEDURE There are different methods of distributing the surveys; by post, e-mail, or personally. For this particular research the surveys were distributed personally and also conducted online to receive results from travel agencies that are out of reach. Also a higher number of responses increased the accuracy of results. 4.0 Findings and Discussion 5.0 Recommendations So many questions arise as to what factors cause turnover intentions among employees in travel agencies, one of the questions is: Could the problem possibly root from the tourism education and training itself? Since, the operations of travel agencies are not very precise and adequate (i.e. there is no exact procedure to be followed in jobs of those working in travel agencies), it may be possible that students who graduate with a diploma/degree in tourism related studies are not well-prepared to deal with globalization and the effects it has on the tourism industry. Therefore, training and development has an important impact on the development of skilled professionals prepared for the business operations taking part in travel agencies on a daily basis.
